Webinar on Sensitization on Ragging, Laws/Regulations, and Live Case Studies
National Medical Commission (NMC) continues to receive a significant number of complaints related to ragging, particularly from first- and second-year MBBS students. Most incidents are reported from hostels and campuses and involve physical violence, verbal abuse, intimidation, extortion, and severe mental harassment. In some tragic cases, such acts have led to extreme psychological distress and suicide.
The NMC Anti-Ragging Regulations, 2021, aligned with UGC Regulations, clearly define ragging and prescribe strict punitive measures, including suspension, expulsion, cancellation of admission, and criminal prosecution. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse for either students or institutions.
Further, a National Task Force under the Chairmanship of a retired Supreme Court Judge and the National Human Rights Commission have emphasized preventive measures, timely action, identification of root causes, and strengthening mental-health awareness.
